Every list of the world's greatest driving roads has the Stelvio near the top, which is usually a reason to be suspicious of it. Reputations like that tend to outlive the thing that earned them. We went to find out whether this one still holds up, or whether it's become a road you photograph rather than actually drive.
The answer arrives about four hairpins in. There's no easing into the Stelvio - it declares itself immediately, the road folding back on itself in a rhythm that has nothing to do with how fast you'd like to be going. Forty-eight numbered bends on the Bormio side alone, each one a fresh decision: how much speed to carry in, how early to get back on the power, whether the car ahead of you has the same idea about racing lines that you do.
A road that predates comfort
What's easy to forget, looking at drone footage of the switchbacks from a safe distance, is that the Stelvio wasn't built for any of this. It was engineered in the 1820s as a military and trade route between Lombardy and Tyrol, at a time when the idea of driving it for pleasure would have made no sense to anyone. That history shows. The road doesn't flatter modern cars the way a purpose-built circuit does - there's camber that catches you out, walls with no run-off, and a surface that's been patched so many times it has its own topology.
None of which is a complaint. It's the reason the Stelvio still feels dangerous in a way that a lot of "great driving roads" have been engineered out of. You're not fighting the car here. You're negotiating with the mountain, and the mountain doesn't negotiate back.
We ran the pass in both directions across two days, which turned out to matter more than expected. The Bormio ascent is the famous one - the postcard shot, the numbered markers, the crowd of cyclists at the top comparing Strava times. But the descent into Prato, taken the next morning before the tour buses arrive, is where the road actually gets good: fewer hairpins, longer sweepers, and a rhythm that finally lets a classic car's gearing do what it was built for.
What it takes to drive it properly
The cars that suit the Stelvio best aren't the fastest ones. Short gearing matters more than outright power - you're rarely above third gear, and the ability to place the front end precisely through a decreasing-radius bend matters far more than a big number on a spec sheet. It's a road that rewards mechanical sympathy: brakes that can take repeated hard use without fading, a driving position that lets you actually see the apex, and a support crew who know the difference between a car that's struggling and one that's just being driven properly.
That last point is why we never run it without a mechanic and a chase vehicle. Sixty-year-old components have earned the right to a second opinion within reach.
